Why should you get a Veterinary Technician degree?
Veterinary Technician careers are always in high demand!
Veterinary technicians usually begin work as trainees under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. With all specialized work involving care and some environmental hazards, extensive hands-on experience with a variety of laboratory equipment, including diagnostic and medical equipment, usually requires a period of on-the-job training.
Career Outlook
For those with a passion for animals, working in this industry may be a great fit. However, the work has its challenges, as well. Some work environments are noisy and untidy. It can also be emotionally challenging to work with abused or neglected animals and those that must be euthanized. When working with wild animals, or animals that are frightened or hurt, people may be at risk of being bitten, scratched or kicked. There may also be irregular hours involved. Animals will need care and attention every day, even if that day happens to be on a weekend or holiday.
Veterinary technicians can work in very diverse environments, including:
- Veterinary offices
- Boarding kennels
- Pet stores
- Animal shelters
- Horse stables
- laboratories
- Farms
Education Requirements
Excellent job opportunities are expected because of the relatively few veterinary technology graduates each year. The number of 2-year programs has recently grown, but due to small class sizes, fewer graduates are anticipated each year, which is not expected to meet demand.
Salary Information
Last year, the national median average salary of veterinary technicians came in at around $27,500.
Growth Statistics
The need for animal care and service workers is expected to grow faster than average through at least 2012. Not only is the pet population for the United States expected to increase, but the number of people who take advantage of luxury services such as grooming, boarding and training services is expected to rise as well. More and more pet owners consider their pet part of the family and are willing to spend more money on them.
