Computer Networking careers are always in high demand!

Computer networking specialists have the skills to select, configure and troubleshoot systems of computers, effectively connecting people – no matter how far apart they may be. Computer networking specialists provide technical assistance, support and advice to customers and other users. This occupational group includes technical support specialists and help desk technicians.

Career Outlook

Network and computer systems administrators design, install and support an organization’s computer systems. They are responsible for local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), network segments, and Internet and intranet systems. They work in a variety of environments, including professional offices, small businesses, government organizations and large corporations.

Computer networking specialists can also qualify for duties as:

  • Network administrators
  • WAN specialists
  • Web server administrators
  • Network technicians

Education Requirements

Computer support specialists and systems administrators, over the next decade, who have strong computer skills but do not have a college degree should continue to qualify for some entry-level positions. Over the long run, however, the professionals who have higher levels of training before entering the industry will advance further than those with only minimal certifications.

Salary Information

Median annual earnings of wage-and-salary network and computer systems administrators were $62,130 in May 2006.

Growth Statistics

In 2002, the Information Technology Association of America predicted that employers had 1.1 million technology job openings for that year. Companies were unable to fill almost 600,000 of those jobs due to a shortage of qualified workers. Unfortunately, as the years go on, this gap continues to get larger. This means more companies will be looking for qualified computer networking specialists and will pay more for their services.
