Education Requirements
Aside from the traditional university's four-year Criminal Justice major, there are many schools that have Criminal Justice programs that reward certifications in a matter of weeks. Most states require that security personnel be licensed after their homeland secrurity training. To be licensed, individuals usually must be at least 18 years old; pass a background check; and complete classroom training in such subjects as property rights, emergency procedures and detention of suspected criminals. Drug testing often is required and may be random and ongoing.
The area that sets this industry apart is the immense specialization within which may require other short certification programs all the way up to a Bachelor's degree. Be sure to check with each school to find out what additional courses are required, if any, to become a homeland security agent.
Growth Statistics
Job growth will be above average for the next decade, as security is an increasing concern with many people. Privatized security is also gaining more ground, as is the credibility of homeland security agents as acceptable replacements for events and assets once only thought suitable for police and other public safety officers. In addition to full-time job opportunities, the limited homeland security training requirements and flexible hours attract many people seeking part-time or second jobs.
