According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median hourly wage of aircraft mechanics and service technicians was about $21.77 in May 2004. The average for avionics technicians in 2004 was $21.30 per hour. Mechanics who work on jets for major airlines make more than mechanics who work on other aircraft.

Education Requirements

Some mechanics learn their trade by on-the-job training, but most attend trade schools or career training schools. There are many requirements for these positions, such as refresher courses if the potential employee has not logged 1,000 work hours in the past 24 months.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, growth in this career field is going to be about as fast as average through 2014. This is defined as a growth rate of 9 to 17 percent over that time period. Many new jobs will be open as former employees retire from this career.
